Kwan is an electrophysiologist with expertise spanning single-cell intrinsic properties, synaptic mechanisms, and network-level activity in pain-related neural circuits. He earned his Ph.D. in Medical Science from Seoul National University and has conducted pain research in both academic and industry settings, including the University of Texas, the University of Pittsburgh, the University of Toronto, and Nevro Corp. In the Tawfik Lab, he investigates age-related pain mechanisms and the electrophysiological properties of iPSC-derived neurons from patients with chronic pain.
Outside the lab, Kwan finds joy in listening to and performing cello music. He is traveling through time—journeying into the past with Bach’s Cello Suites, embracing the vitality of the present with Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C Major, and imagining the future through the beauty of Schumann’s Andante Cantabile.
